Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but proper preparation and aftercare are an important part of making sure your tattoo heals properly and looks great for years to come. At Three Hares, we want you to feel confident before, during, and after your appointment. A little preparation beforehand, and consistent care afterward, can make a big difference in the healing process.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin healthy and prevent feeling faint.
Eat well: Have a nutritious, balanced meal about an hour before your session to keep your blood sugar stable and manage pain. Bring a snack or juice for longer sessions.
Rest: Get a full night of sleep so your body is ready to handle the stress of the tattooing process.
Wear comfortable clothing: Choose loose, soft clothing that will not rub against or irritate the area being tattooed.
Skip alcohol: Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment to prevent excessive bleeding.
If your artist used Saran wrap: unwrap it after 2-3 hours (unless otherwise specified by your artist) and wash with an unscented, gentle, antibacterial soap like Dial. Let it air out for a few hours (or overnight) before applying ointment. With clean hands, apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor ointment 1-2 times per day, only if it feels dry. If little pimples appear or it’s staying red for more than a few days, you are likely applying too much ointment.
If your artist used second-skin* (Dermshield / Tegaderm / Saniderm): leave it on for 3-4 days. It is waterproof so you can shower normally, but abstain from heavy sweating or workouts. After 3-4 days, remove it in the shower, pulling slowly downward so it stretches out and lifts off the tattoo. Wash the area well with gentle soap to remove any glue residue. Let it fully dry afterward for a few hours, and then with clean hands, apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor ointment 1-2 times per day, only if it feels dry. If little pimples appear or it’s staying red for more than a few days, you are likely applying too much ointment.
*If you notice the edges of the second skin getting very red, uncomfortable or itchy after 1-2 days, remove it early and wash off any glue residue.
Do not pick or scratch, try to let any flakes fall off naturally.
Avoid swimming (pools and ocean) for 2 weeks, and keep it well-protected under clothing from sun exposure for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks it is ok to put sunblock on it. To keep your tattoo at it’s best, always apply sunblock (SPF 50+) when it’s going to be exposed!
